First Assignment: Krugman's Fictitious Quote
Deadline:
Wednesday January 28, 2004, 6:00PM
VALUE: 5pts.
For this first assignment, I have borrowed a fictitious quote taken
from Paul Krugman, 1998, Pop Internationalism, Cambridge,
Mass.,
MIT Press, p. 118. I want you to write a short comment (2 or three
sentences)
on each of the six numbered sections of the sentence. What do you think
about those assertions? Are they reasonable? Do you think they are
"correct?"
There are no "good" answers to these questions, but I am very
interested
in reading what you have to say. You only need to do this short
exercise
and you will automatically receive five points. We will discuss your
answers on Thursday (1/29/04). Consequently, you need to respond by
class time
Friday.
Send me your answers via electronic
mail at duchesne@buffalo.edu.
You might want to print the quote and bring your answers to class on Thursday January 29.
Without further ado, here is Krugman's fictitious quote:
"We need a new economic paradigm, because today America is part of a truly global economy (1). To maintain its standard of living, America now has to learn to compete in an even tougher world market place (2). That's why high productivity and product quality have become essential (3). We need to move the American economy into the high-value sectors (4) that will generate jobs (5) for the future. And the only way we can be competitive in the new global economy is if we forge a new partnership between government and business (6)."
