PSC 345: CANADIAN POLITICS

8/29/2000

ASSIGNMENT #1

DEADLINE: WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 6 AT THE BEGINNING OF CLASS.

THIS ASSIGNMENT IS WORTH 5 POINTS.

QUESTION:

For this first assignment, I want you to familiarize yourself with the Canadian Politics links page and learn a little more about Canada.  To accomplish this aim I want you to browse our official links page and find an answer for the following 10 questions. You also need to indicate the link where you found the answer. Keep in mind that an answer can be found at more than one site and make sure that the information you find is not outdated. Also, you may need some navigation before you reach a site with the right answer (you never need to follow more than three or four links). Each question is worth .5pt. Forward your answers to my Teaching Assistant, Sean Liu at: xun_liu@hotmail.com

1) Which Department is responsible for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP)?

2) Which political party favors the independence of Western Canada?

3) Which riding (similar to U.S. district) does the leader of the New democratic Party of Canada (NDP) represent? (Hint: Depending on how you conduct your search, you may need to find who is the leader of the NDP first)

4) How many seats (elected members of parliaments) are there in the House of Commons?

5) Who is the Canadian Ambassador in Washington? (Hint: Be especially careful about outdated information here)

6) What was Canada's percentage of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) devoted to military expenditures for the fiscal year 97/98?

7) Which agency is responsible for regulating Canada's broadcasting and telecommunications systems?

8) Which web site of the Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade is dedicated to Canada-Japan relations?

9) Which provincial party claims that it "has been working for individual freedom, lower taxes, and free enterprise on a full-time basis since the party was founded on January 1, 1984?"

10) Which interest group has as its main objective to "to change the way the Canadian Constitution is amended so that the process is open, democratic, responsible, and legitimate?"

Bonus question (very tough) worth an extra .5pt:
